I’m 17 years old and live in Florida. What are the requirements for getting my first driver’s license, and do I need to complete a driving course before applying?

Hi Steve,

As a 17-year-old in Florida, getting your first driver’s license involves a few key steps. First, you must complete the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course. This 4-hour course is required for all new drivers and covers traffic laws and the dangers of driving under the influence.

You’ll also need to have held a learner’s license for at least 12 months without any traffic convictions. During this time, it’s important to log 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours of night driving, to gain practical experience.

Another requirement is passing the Class E Knowledge Exam, which tests your understanding of Florida’s traffic laws and road signs. If you haven’t taken it yet, this is a necessary step before moving forward.

Once ready, you’ll need to pass the Class E Driving Skills Test. This hands-on test evaluates your driving ability and is conducted using your vehicle, which must be insured and properly registered.

Be sure to bring the required documents to the DHSMV office, including proof of identity, Social Security number, and residential address. Completing these steps will set you on your way to earning your license.

Best regards,
Paul
